How Seravo's Tested Automatic Updates Work

Seravo's tested automatic updates keep your WordPress site secure and fully functional. Learn what our updates include and why they might sometimes be cancelled.

Seravo's WordPress upkeep includes regular, automatic, and tested updates. We have built our own testing system that allows updates to be run as safely as possible, ensuring your site stays operational without its design or features breaking due to updates. You can manage your update settings in the WordPress admin dashboard via the Seravo Plugin.

What do automatic updates include?

  • WordPress, themes, and plugins: Automatic updates include the WordPress core (minor updates), themes, and plugins. This also covers premium plugins, provided their license is valid. Major version updates for the WordPress core are not done automatically, as they are the most likely to break sites.

  • Security updates (always forced): Security updates for WordPress, plugins, and server software are always installed immediately, bypassing the testing system, regardless of your automatic update settings. Thanks to our 24/7 monitoring and automated updates, your site is always protected, which is also backed by Seravo's Security Guarantee.

  • PHP security updates vs. version changes: We take care of the security updates for the PHP version currently running on the server. However, changing the newer major PHP version (e.g., moving from version 8.1 to 8.2) on the website, is the customer's responsibility. Version changes are not done automatically because a new PHP version always requires ensuring code compatibility. You can safely test and change the PHP version yourself from the Upkeep page in the Seravo Plugin.

Troubleshooting / Frequently Asked Questions

Automatic updates are run regularly every few weeks. If you notice your site hasn't been updated even though the update settings are on, our update system has likely cancelled the update to protect your site.

The most common reasons for an update to be cancelled:

  • Errors in wp-test: A wp-test is run before updating. If the test returns errors, the update is cancelled. You can check the test results on the Upkeep page of the Seravo Plugin. The errors must be fixed for updates to pass in the future.

  • Visual regression test: The system compares the visual appearance of the site before and after the update. If the difference is too large (for example, a visual element breaks on the page), the process is stopped.

  • Where can I find more info about the failure? You can view more detailed information about cancelled updates on the Logs page in the Seravo Plugin, or on the server in the /data/log/update.log file.
